Chocolate Eugon – Prepared Culture Media For Taylorella Equigenitalis showing growth

“A mare in Florida (FL) has been confirmed culture positive by the USDA APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) for Taylorella equigenitalis, the bacterium that causes contagious equine metritis (CEM). The affected mare, the breeding stallion, and one other mare are under quarantine. A comprehensive epidemiological investigation is being conducted including traceback and history of the breeding stallion. The last detection of CEM in the United States was confirmed at NVSL in May, 2013.” (Source: WAHIS – World Organization for Animal Health Reporting System)

It is CEM which caused the restrictions to be placed on equine semen being sent from the USA to Canada, following the outbreak in 2008. Further details and tracebacks on this current case are not available at this time. We can only hope that the CEM identified in Florida is a single incident!

We have more information about Contagious Equine Metritis on our website in our Contagious Equine Metritis (Taylorella equigenitalis) article to be found at Equine-Reproduction.com/cem
